Here’s a chance for you to make your voice heard to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in Salmon, Idaho, where another “predator derby” is being proposed for January 2-4, 2015. This event is a contest to see who can kill the most coyotes and wolves and the BLM is taking public input about what they should consider before authorizing it to occur on public lands. Details on the proposal can be found here. The permit would be valid for five years after issuance.
Currently, the BLM plans to analyze:
- How would the proposed event impact economic and social values?
- How would the proposed event impact existing recreational uses? and
- How would the proposed action affect wildlife habitat and threatened species in the project area?
In commenting, you can respond to BLM’s questions or you can suggest more things for the agency to consider in deciding whether to authorize the event.

Wolves, coyotes, and other predators are an important part of the balance of nature. The wanton killing of these creatures upsets pack social dynamics and disrupts predator/prey ecosystem structure. Western Watersheds Project opposes the use of public lands for these dishonorable contests and will challenge any permit issued by the BLM.
